A melonized gear (or melonite/QPQ-treated gear) is an aftermarket engine distributor gear treated with a specialized salt-bath nitriding process. This surface hardening treatment reduces friction, prevents premature teeth wear, and provides broad compatibility with cast iron, ductile iron, and certain steel billet camshafts
